The cultural landscape which extends over the hills above the Mokronog settlement, is composed of numerous sacred buildings, among which the church of the Sorrowful Mother of God is the largest and best-preserved pilgrim church in Dolenjska. The holy steps to the mountain are the finest and most uniquely formed pilgrimage stairs in Slovenia. They are built from black Carrara marble, and their path leads to seven chapels representing the seven sorrows of Mary. Pilgrims from near and far used to visit here. Even to this day, you can find a pilgrim from a foreign land on the main pilgrimage on the Sunday of St Bartholomew. Some even spend the night before the holiday in the church.
