Along the seveh hills of Novo mesto

Novo mesto, like Rome, lies on seven hills. You will climb some, just touch others, but you should definitely set aside a whole day if you want to see at least the main sights.

Route Description

From the Main Square, we pass the town hall and the market and ascend to the Cathedral of St. Nicholas. Opposite the provost’s house to the left lies Kapitel Hill (253 m above sea level), the first viewpoint on our route. From Kapitel, we descend to Novi Trg and cross the main road into the old town just a few meters from the underpass. At the bank, we turn onto the former provincial road, now transformed into Kette Promenade — a walking path that leads across Marof Hill (228 m a.s.l.) to Bršljin, where we reach the main road into Novo mesto again. We cross the railway line and the freight rail track, then turn left. The asphalt road by the former factory soon becomes a riverside walking path along the Krka River, leading us to the Loka Inn.

Here, we can take a break and refresh ourselves, then turn onto the footbridge across  the Krka River, which leads us to the Portoval sports complex. At the tennis courts, we turn right and walk around the football fields, then turn left into the forest. To our right is the third hill – Portoval (225 m a.s.l.). From the forest, we follow the path that descends to the main Novo mesto–Straža road. We cross it at the pedestrian crossing and continue along Šegova Street to the Leon Štukelj Sports Hall. Behind it rises Šipčev Hill (213 m a.s.l.). We cross the railway line and turn left onto Bajčeva Street, heading to the Church of St. Michael. At the church, we turn left and then immediately right at the intersection to the railway overpass. Here, we turn right and cross the Težka voda stream onto the walking path that leads us up to Grm Hill (192 m a.s.l.). The path takes us past Grm Castle, the Krajec House, and the Mordax Chapel, then descends to the primary school, where we turn right and arrive at Kandijska Road.

We cross the road, turn right, and take the stairs next to the Mercator store to reach Slančeva Street. We turn left, then take the first street on the right,  which brings us to Recljev Hill (221 m a.s.l.). We climb the stairs and turn left towards Ragovska Street. At the store, we cross the road and head toward Ragov log. We follow the walking path above the Krka River, then turn onto the wooden bridge over the river and descend to the children’s playground and past the courthouse. Via Streliška and Vrhovčeva Streets, we return to the Main Square.
