Castle Žužemberk

Žužemberk Castle is one of the most picturesque and typical medieval fortresses in Slovenia. Its remains rise mightily on a steep cliff above the river Krka. The stone door of the quadrangular tower is said to have been engraved with the year 1000, which testifies that William I, the husband of St. Eme, who was then a border guard of the Savinjska region. The Market Days with the Medieval Day, which take place as part of the celebration of the municipal holiday on 15 July, attract the most interest and visitors.
