Kobila stream Gorge

Hidden in the heart of the Gorjanci Hills, just a few kilometres south of Šentjernej, lies the Kobila Valley – one of the most beautiful and unspoilt valleys in the Dolenjska region. Over thousands of years, the Kobila Stream has carved a picturesque gorge through steep forested slopes, rocky outcrops, and deep ravines. Visitors are accompanied by the soothing sound of flowing water, rapids, small waterfalls, and magnificent forests.

Thanks to its exceptional natural preservation, most of the valley is protected as the Kobile Forest Reserve and forms part of the Natura 2000 network. The area provides an important habitat for a wide variety of plant and animal species. Among its most remarkable inhabitants is the white-backed woodpecker, a rare and endangered bird that thrives in old-growth, well-preserved forests.

Although the Kobila Valley now feels wild, secluded, and almost untouched, it was once closely connected to local life. Watermills, sawmills, a blacksmith’s workshop, and a wood-steaming facility once operated along the stream. As these activities gradually disappeared and the area became less accessible, nature reclaimed the landscape, preserving one of the most valuable natural treasures of the Gorjanci Hills.

The valley is an excellent destination for hikers, forest lovers, and anyone seeking a peaceful escape into unspoilt nature. It is also crossed by the European long-distance hiking trail E7 and the Trdina Trail, making it a perfect stop on either a short walk or a longer hiking adventure through the Gorjanci Hills.
