Every person experiences art in their own way. Perhaps with a book in hand in the forest. You can participate in numerous traditional music festivals in the Dolenjska region, where local and foreign performers come together. This year as a listener, next year as an active participant. You can explore the distinctive architecture, heritage, and cultural landscape through themed guided tours (“Forgotten Half”). Relaxed summer evenings under the stars are accompanied by outdoor movie screenings, while all generations can explore the identity of the region through exhibitions or creative workshops at the Dolenjska Museum. Or enjoying exhibitions featuring renowned local artists (such as Božidar Jakac) or perhaps encountering international naive arts for the first time.
towns and squares
Dolenjska is a distinctly rural landscape, so the contrast you experience on urban squares due to abundant greenery is somewhat blurred, and often you don’t even notice that you are walking along a city street, especially when you were just observing a colorful butterfly on a freshly mown meadow. However, you can still feel the urban pulse of the Glavni trg (Main Square) in Novo mesto, especially during the numerous events that take place throughout the year. The renovated oldest medieval square in Slovenia, closed to traffic, is an exceptional location for a relaxed stroll or a morning coffee. The central square in Žužemberk also leaves a unique impression on visitors, adorned by the majestic Žužemberk Castle. The most impressive view of the castle can be captured from the bridge, under which the rapids of the beautiful Krka River flow pleasantly.
